Self-development and self-improvement is an important component of the life of each of us.

This process is a conscious management of personal growth, the study of new knowledge and skills, modeling behavior that should be traced in all areas of life. This is an essential attribute of every day spent striving to become better. This is a continuous work on oneself.

Almost all books of self-development and self-improvement systematize such steps for starting work on oneself:

  • conducting introspection and self-observation in order to compare oneself with others and identify “weak” places;
  • setting the goal of self-development;
  • developing a program to improve your personality;
  • manifestation of will and strength of character.

The difference between self-development and self-improvement

These two processes differ in their goals. Self-development is aimed at spiritual personal development, the formation of positive thinking. The results of achieving such goals are vivid, but immeasurable in numbers, actual results and deadlines (good mood, change of lifestyle, environment, etc.)

Self-improvement is measurable in numbers and limited in time (concrete improvement of skills, scaling, offering innovative business models). For example: weight loss over 3 months by 9 kg. Here, the concrete result is evaluated.

Self-development and self-improvement are in close connection with each other.

Personal improvement is not possible without the manifestation of willpower. What prevents personal improvement:

  • blindly following the leader;
  • following the only recognized technique.

In the composition of the word SELF-development, the first part indicates precisely that it is a person’s own choice. The opinion of other people has weight, but you cannot rely on it completely

self-development Principles

Personal self-development is one of the important areas of modern psychology. This is an activity on the formation of independence, mental activity in such categories as:

  • judgments
  • actions;
  • assessment;
  • relationship.

This is a continuous process of change and improvement according to self-defined guidelines and resources embedded in the personality itself.

Self-Improvement Principles

It is important to understand that information overload does not always produce positive results. You should correctly understand the basic principles of self-improvement:

  1. The ability to correctly formulate the ultimate goals.
  2. Providing an optimal environment for successful growth.
  3. Phased development of necessary skills.
  4. Practical reinforcement of each theoretically substantiated step.

Practical confirmation of everything planned plays a crucial role for personal development.

Why is it important to engage in self-development?

Indeed, why do we need all this torment? Learning new information, tedious sports, constant stress … After all, you can relax on the couch, watch TV shows and enjoy doing nothing. But idleness is an imaginary happiness, the reverse side of which is fraught with depression and disappointment in life.

A person needs constant growth. When a person stops moving (not only in the physical, but also in the mental sense), he begins to degrade. One example is swimming – in order to stay on the water, we must make efforts. After relaxing and losing control, the swimmer immediately goes to the bottom.

For example, take a look around and compare happy and unhappy friends. What is the difference? The happy ones open a new business, study, go in for sports, constantly travel, learn something new. The unfortunate people have worked at one job for decades, have fun only with beer, and are constantly looking for those responsible for their failures.

The answer to our question is simple – it is necessary to engage in self-development in order to become happy. Anyone who has taken this path understands that pleasure brings both the process itself and the results. And that this resource is inexhaustible, because the top bar of excellence simply does not exist.

Stages of self-development

Universal steps do not exist. All individually, but here are the global stages.

1. Awareness of one’s own mistakes

They come through our own experience, which is much more important than the advice of others. What matters is not so much the errors themselves as how to overcome them, the conclusions made, and further decisions.

Given their own mistakes, it is important to “get off the spiral” in time, without committing them again and again. Awareness of the importance of change makes a breakthrough. The correctness of the first step determines the effectiveness of the entire path.

2. Setting a specific goal

It should be as outlined as possible. For its clarity, it is important:

  • fix the task in a notebook, writing it down with your own hand;
  • connect it with personal beliefs, and not the opinion of people around and accepted attitudes.

Is the goal really that important? How to verify this? The signal is the irresistibility of desire. If even strong obstacles cannot break the will to achieve a result, but, on the contrary, strengthen it, therefore, loyalty to the goal is not in doubt. If motivation subsides, the desire to go to the goal weakens, perhaps it is not formulated correctly.

3. Plan development

Having determined the goal, you should develop a plan of movement to it. That allows you to split the overall goal into smaller tasks, the implementation of which is easy to control at individual stages. For example, the goal of improving your physical form is divided into tasks:

  • daily morning exercises;
  • walk the number of steps per day;
  • follow the chosen diet;
  • quit smoking;
  • take daily walks before bedtime, etc.

The goal should not be comprehensive and should not cover different aspects of life. It is better to narrow it down to a visible size by defining a time frame so that the achievement of the result is real.

4. Movement towards the Goal

It should be done daily. Even a few small steps forward give confidence. For example, with the goal of improving your physical form, you should study the publications in this area, watch videos. To study modern techniques, practical recommendations of experts, reviews of friends and colleagues.

Psychologists advice:

  • start small;
  • consider the mistakes made;
  • strengthen the positive aspects;
  • head towards the goal steadily.

Each step should accompany the joy of what has already been achieved.

Having knowledge and skills, it is important to apply and consolidate them. Over time, it will be easier to overcome difficulties, the goal will become clearer, confidence will grow stronger. The main thing is not to take breaks in the forward movement.

The results of the self-development process

In the process of overcoming problems on the path of self-improvement, they no longer seem so complicated. Own hidden opportunities are becoming more apparent. Outdated installations are easily discarded. Personality is being improved.

The continuous process of self-improvement is associated with the formation of a single individual. Self-development is a progressive movement towards a dream and a clearly defined goal. Therefore, it is important to give yourself a setting every morning for a successful day!
